Disclosure Are Taking Control

The Lawrence brothers, or Disclosure, are truly on a roll right now. They have just released an incredible EP, put out one of the best mixes of the year in the form of a blissful 35 minute sweep through Boiler Room, and their new video for their track "Control" is doooppeee.

The most interesting part about their recent rise: they are both still in their teens --16 and 19, respectfully-- and all of their accolades and feats have spawned in a matter of months. The future is bright, indeed.

Bonus Round: Check out their Boiler Room mix on Youtube below, or via Soundcloud on Live For The Funk

Gesaffelstein is Depraved in Belgium

We're going to assume Gesaffelstein named one of his forthcoming tracks "Belgium" because he knows there are lots of people out there --including us-- who refer to him as "Gesaffelwaffle." Yeah.

Next up on the German tech-sorceror's plate: an EP on the almost infallible Bromance Records. The "Rise of Depravity" EP (might as well begin penning those corpse paint order forms now, Bromance PR dudes) will be out within a couple weeks, and previews of two tracks have been made available via Soundcloud. The two tracks, "Depravity" and "Belgium," are both fine examples of the sinister, gloomy techno-as-aural-witchcraft we have come to recognize as the Gesaffelwaffle's (the name will stick, TRUST us) modus operandi.

Check out snippets of both tracks below, and mark your calenders for the July 9th release date of "Rise of Depravity." Promo shirts with illegible print in the shape of vomited, pencil-thin trees sold separately.

Above & Beyond: Small Moments Like These (Official Music Video & Free Download)

“Life is made of small moments like these… We’ve written a brand new track to say thank you for being there. It’s the soundtrack to this, our new video.” - Above & Beyond

Over the last few months the famous Trance trio Above & Beyond have been traveling across the world on their famous "Group Therapy" tour, which has been non stop for these guys. They have embraced us with many wonderful, and of course memorable, events starting out in Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Spain, Ibiza, Ukraine, and all of Europe. Here at home, we can not forget when they sold out all three nights of their #GroupTherapyLA show at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. If you had the opportunity to attend any of these three nights you knew how epic, beautiful, great, and amazing it was. Remember when A&B also wanted the fans to record our experience for which ever Group Therapy show we attended? Well it all lead to Above & Beyond's brand new track and music video "Small Moments Like These". The music video highlights all of this past years Group Therapy 2012 Tour. And to make this music video even more special, they gave us all the opportunity to download this up lifting track for free. Listen to it and download it down below. Enjoy!!

Live Nation Makes a "HARD" Buy-Out

And so, the ever-interesting chess game that is American EDM promotion continues...

Via The New York Times & Ben Sisario:

Big money is flowing into electronic dance music. In the latest example of corporate interest in this once-ignored market, Live Nation Entertainment said on Tuesday that it had acquired Hard Events, a Los Angeles company that has put on popular festivals and concerts across North America.

Yet such investments are fueling fears that a bubble is taking hold in the world of electronic dance music, or E.D.M., jeopardizing the creative and commercial health of the music. The issue has been intensely debated inside the music business, and recently some of the genre’s stars have sounded alarms as well.

“E.D.M. has turned into a massively marketed cruise ship, and it’s sinking fast,” the D.J. and producer Deadmau5 wrote on his Tumblr page on Tuesday. “All I’m trying to do is put on my life jacket and swim as far away from this shipwreck as fast as I can.”

The stakes are high for dance music. So far this year Live Nation has also bought Cream Holdings, a major British dance promoter, and the media mogul Robert F.X. Sillerman has begun what he says will be $1 billion in acquisitions. Young and relatively untested D.J.’s like Avicii have had mixed success playing in amphitheaters and arenas this summer, leading some industry leaders to say they are preparing for a “market correction.”

For many of the independent promoters who have dominated the dance market over the last two decades, Wall Street investment could provide a welcome cushion in a risky business, and fuel expansion in to new markets. But they also worry that corporate involvement will damage the culture of E.D.M.

In an interview earlier this year with The New York Times, Gary Richards, the veteran promoter and D.J. who founded Hard Events, was one of those people voicing concern, saying, “You can’t just franchise this like McDonald’s.” On Tuesday, he defended his decision to sell to Live Nation, saying that the deal would help him expand Hard, while maintaining its character.

“I’m always going to fight the good fight,” Mr. Richards said. “The reason I’m different from other festivals is that I bring the new thing, develop it and bring it to the masses. This will only be able to help, because now instead of just L.A. and New York, I will be able to do this in South Africa, South America. It’s only a good thing.”

Financial terms of Hard’s deal with Live Nation were not disclosed. In interviews, Mr. Richards and Michael Rapino, the president of Live Nation, both said it would expand into new markets, although they indicated that nothing was imminent; Hard’s major festival, Hard Summer, will be held in Los Angeles on Aug. 3 and 4, with Skrillex, Chromeo, Squarepusher, James Murphy and dozens of others.

Live Nation has taken steps to establish itself as a credible force in electronic music. When it bought Cream Holdings, it made the company’s respected founder, James Barton, president of Live Nation’s electronic division. Mr. Barton said he had the confidence of Mr. Rapino to build stable dance properties.

“Are we going to be put under tremendous pressure to change?” Mr. Barton said in an interview. “No, not frankly. I don’t see that today, and I’m not seeing that in the future.”

Others in the business worry that the integrity of the festivals, which have developed an idiosyncratic culture since the music first became popular in the 1980s, would be compromised under corporate control. Neil Moffitt, the chief executive of Angel Management Group, a live entertainment company in Las Vegas, was critical of Live Nation’s stewardship of major dance music events, citing a joint venture deal in 2006 for the British festival Global Gathering, which he said quickly deteriorated.

Mr. Moffitt said he was concerned about the long-term intentions of investors like Mr. Sillerman, who in the 1990s combined regional rock promoters into a national entity, and sold it to Clear Channel Communications for $4.4 billion. (Clear Channel later spun it off as Live Nation, which since going public in 2005 has never turned an annual profit.)

“If their objective is to create a second generation of electronic music, where they’re well-funded and have great infrastructure, and the music has a great future, then I’m all for it,” he said. “But if the intent is to sweep up an untapped part of the music industry, take it to the stock market, and everybody cashes out and watches it dissipate, that would be very disappointing.”

Mr. Rapino said that while large-scale E.D.M. events have long been popular in Europe, they are relatively new in the United States, and therefore few promoters had long experience with them.

“It’s not like anyone’s been doing this for a long time,” Mr. Rapino said. “No one has a historic ownership of the space. This is a fragmented marketplace, and we believe that if we can hire credible players that have been in this space, doing what they do best, that we’ll be able to build a smart division.”

Yet promoters like Mr. Richards are part of a generation of independent operators who have been at it for as long as 20 years, and lived through more than one music industry hype cycle in which electronic music seemed on the verge of a mainstream breakthrough, only to retreat into subcultural status.

“The music business is always like this,” Mr. Richards said. “Some genre comes along, and there’s all this attention on it all of a sudden, and then when you look at it you say, who were the pioneers of that genre? And those are one ones that always last.”

Eric Prydz Presents EPIC Radio #2

Whenever the "Prydz" or "Pryda" name is attached to something, my reaction can be sort of bittersweet. On one hand, whenever Prydz is involved the end product is usually spectacular. On the other, the more and more my mind wanders, the more and more I realize there are too few artists in EDM with this man's sensibilities and talent.

Oh well, boo-fucking-hoo. Things could be a lot worse I suppose.

The new edition of "EPIC Radio" is fantastic. Nothing but gorgeous melodies and absolute class all around. "Tune in" below.

Global Dance Electronic Interviews - tyDi

Global Dance Electronic Interviews - tyDi

GDE: How were you introduced to EDM and what was it about it that left such a profound mark on you?

tyDi: I first heard EDM when I was 15 years old, some of my older siblings showed it to me. I was instantly hooked, well, I'm hooked on music in general! It's like a drug, music has the power to change the way you think, it inspires you, it moves your emotions. I always knew that my future would be owned by music.

What are your personal reasons for creating electronic music and out of all its forms why trance?

Actually I wouldn't say I'm strictly trance at all, my latest album Shooting Stars has two trance songs, the rest are house, progressive, pop, breaks, chillout and experimental... I'm not really into any particular genres, I just write music. Electronic music is just my thing, I do love bands, but I'm a bit of technology geek so it makes sense that I got into making music with a computer.

When you hit the decks at a show, what type of show are you trying to deliver to the crowd?

It's always about creating a unique and unforgettable experience, I want my audience to feel like they've experienced something different, I want to take them on a journey.

After hopefully having a long, heralded career in music, what do you hope to have accomplished during your tenure?

I'm not exactly sure, I just hope my music reaches as many people as possible and that my audience continues to stay attached to my work. I want to make people happy, if I can keep doing what I'm doing now then I'll be satisfied.

Growing up, what were some of the tracks and artists that really made a mark on you and caught your attention?

BT was a huge inspiration to my work. His music was and still is a step above the rest, it's an honor to be working with him now!

When you're approached to produce a remix, what's the process like to actually remix and put your own take on a track? How do you go about observing another artist's work and considering what you want to edit and change about it?

I like to bring something new to the song, I won't remix a track if I can't improve it or take it in an entirely new direction. Often I'll only use the vocal from another song, and I'll completely re-write the instrumental.

How is the EDM scene in Australia? You must know it like the back of your hand, considering you've received such high ranks as a DJ there.

It's great! Australia has a huge scene for electronic music, however these days I spend most of my life in America. I tour the USA and Canada more than I tour in Australia.

What do you have in the works for the upcoming year?

A new album, new videos, new singles, new Global Soundsystem mix compilation and a whole lot of touring around the world!

How do you go about about composing a song? Where do you usually draw most of the influence for your creative process from?

I often start on the piano, I write the musical elements of my songs first. All of my music can be broken down to a song; verse, chorus, bridge..etc. My inspiration comes from anything, anywhere, I like to write about topics that are meaningful to me.

Is there ever a sense of competition with music for you? When you hear another artist's work or see them perform and enjoy it do you ever reflect on it and take it as initiative to push harder with your own career?

Healthy competition arises sometimes, but I very rarely. I just keep my eyes on my own work, I'm forever trying to better myself and challenge myself musically, that's the most important thing.

If you could control what effect one of your songs or melodies had on somebody, what would that be? When someone's a fan of tyDi, what is it that you hope your music gives them?

I just hope people can get an experience from my songs, I want them to be attached to what I write and feel like it has personal meaning to them.

Let's say you were to have time to yourself and could have an introspective personal "time out" of your schedule. What could you say being an artist and live performer has done for you personally as far as improving your life and fulfilling your goals and dreams?

I've definitely become a more worldly person, I've been around the world hundreds of times and seen things that I'd never thought I would see before. It's helped me understand that everyone and everything is different, I've also learned to appreciate just how lucky we all are, and how important it is to love and care for other people. Life isn't about you, it's about others.

Be sure to catch tyDi in Las Vegas on Friday, June 22nd at Marquee Nightclub and at

(IGC) International Gloving Championship in Pomona Saturday, June 23rd for a special extended set.

ASAP Skrilly

Look at this picture; just look at it. We're mortified by it, but kind of intrigued and strangely hopeful at the same time.

Durpstep maestro Skrillex instragrammed the following picture, with the caption of "A$APSkrillinz," and thus the internet imploded. Well, maybe not imploded, but it shook. Kind of. It was like one of those minor, unremarkable tremors that hits a bumfuck part of California and subsequently causes a higher magnitude, equally miniscule pitter-patter on social media.

So, ASAP Rocky x Skrillex. What's the worst that could happen? At least it's something kind of cool, and it's leagues above "Generic Trance/House artist meets Irrelevant Female Vocalist."

In Andy Moor's Arms

Andy Moor's next production first hit the soundwaves via lord of the dance Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance 2012 compilation, and is now in the realm of official releases and summer singles.

"In Your Arms" features vocalist Jessica Sweetman, and is another track in a long line of high-quality, euphoric tracks from Moor. Check out the video below, and purchase the song (as well as a slew of great remixes) on Beatport here.

Arty Opens Space

Arty's sound is getting grander and more epic as time goes on, and his newest release "Open Space" is no different.  There's nothing in this track that allows for periods of "open space," and there's nothing spacious about it. Instead, Arty may have meant to declare that this type of production is powerful enough to forcefully pry open Space itself, and/or fill open spaces with wild, frenzied crowds.

These are just some absolutely electrifying sounds coming from the mind of this young Russian.

Swing on over to Beatport here to purchase "Open Space."

Boys Noize Plans & Plots

This epic promo picture says it all. This fall, techno beast Boys Noize will be launching his very first "live" show, AND drop a new album. The show will be debuted in Europe this year but you know this is going to spread worldwide soon enough. From Australia to Arizona to the Arab Emirates, everyone recognizes the level of ability and talent the Noize brings to the table -- or decks, whichever way you want to look at it.

Via the German tech-god's website:

"Introducing his new album (to be released worldwide through BNR in October 2012), the german tech wizard will perform all his hits – from his debut ‘Oi Oi Oi’ to ‘Power’ and of course his third album – mashed up, wind up and remixed live, like you have never heard or seen it before.

On top of this highly extraordinary musical experience there will be an outstanding production which is going to melt brains.
After years of “raw” touring, it will be the first time that Boys Noize will be staged into the limelight,

2Night, and 2Day, You Will Listen to Flosstradamus

Imagine there was this big trance & hardstyle showcase happening at your favorite local dance music hotspot. Then, imagine you're there partying, making a ruckus, and just genuinely enjoying yourself and about the time the clock strikes midnight, the sound system becomes overtaken by hard, street-seasoned beats straight out of your local dopespot and the floor gets overtaken by a herd of hyped up, dreadlocked demons. I think this is what Flosstradamus and Vyle had in mind for their new collaboration, "2Night."

I think.

Retrospectives of Rave: I Love This City, Northern California

With the big spring festivals such as Coachella and Ultra Music Festival already out of the way, I Love This City set the bar high for 2012’s summer music festival season! There’s always a sense of allure of when it comes to a new massive and I Love This City was no exception. After the success of both California Identity festivals, Live Nation is well on their way to becoming an integral part of the EDM festival scene!

I had the pleasure of being able to attend both days of ILTC San Francisco, and Live Nation (in association with Skills) outdid themselves in terms of the talent. Fridays’s lineup was stacked, with big names such as Duck Sauce, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Afrojack playing back-to-back sets. Saturday was equally as impressive, with major headliners such as BT, Excision, Doctor P, Tiesto, Laidback Luke, and DJ Magazines #1 DJ David Guetta. Though the hype was high for both California dates, the San Francisco event was truly the star.

Originally set to take place at AT&T Park, the notion of having an EDM massive actually set in the city of San Francisco was the major draw for bay area concertgoers. Unfortunately, due to “unforeseen production problems” the concept of hosting a major festival in the city was scraped and the festival was moved to the much larger and more spacious venue -- the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. Though the move was disappointing to most, the change of venue allowed for an increase in the production values. Included in Live Nation’s blueprint: a full audiovisual experience with multiple art installations, over 4,000 sq ft of LED screens, 3 stages (2 in the parking lot at Shoreline and 1 on the main stage) and over 80 of Vau De Vire Society’s most talented acrobats, aerialists, contortionists and burlesque performers as well as a lowering of the age limit which allowed for the next generation of EDM fans to be in attendance.

The highlights of Friday for me included the ever-talented Araabmuzik, who offered an unmatchable live performance; his spin on Flux’s Pavilion’s “Bass Cannon” added to the high energy surrounding the bass stage. Other notable performances included Dirtyphonics, Steve Aoki, and the legendary Crystal Method. However, my overall favorite performances of the night went to Sebastian Ingrosso and Afrojack, who both managed to keep the crowd off their feet till the end of show! I’ve always been a sucker for “Miami 2 Ibiza” as well as “Lose My Mind,” and when Sebastian dropped both I definitely did lose my mind.

As far as Afrojack is concerned, they don’t call him one of the kings of Dirty Dutch for nothing. He opened his set with a fist pumping mash up of “Rock The House,” and Example’s “Love Kick Starts Again,” as well as playing an exclusive clip of his new remix of Michael Jackson’s “Bad.”

After Friday, my expectations for Saturday were quite high, but I found Saturday to be even more enjoyable than Friday! My favorite set of the day had to go to one of my all time favorite DJ’s Laidback Luke. During his performance there was never a shortage of his signature double L’s in the crowd. Over at the bass stage Doctor P and Kill the Noise definitely cemented their positions as two of the best dubstep DJs in the world; both delivered an insane amount of bass to an ever-eager crowd. Tiesto and David Guetta were the crowd favorites, Tiesto had the crowd jumping to hits such as “Maximal Crazy,” and his new collab with Swanky Tunes entitled “Make Some Noise.” Guetta on the other hand is a master at getting a crowd engaged into his set, and he had my fellow bay area ravers singing along to his most well known tunes, such as “Without You” and an original mash up of Red Hot Chili Peppers “Otherside,” soon after ending one hell of a memorial day weekend with Avicii’s smash hit “Levels.”

A-Trak Does New Lands Justice

A-Trak, is there any type of production he caaannn't do?

In his latest, the hat-obsessed dance music prince takes on a track from french electro-dons Justice's upcoming New Lands EP. At first, the song starts out thick, heavy, and on an aggressive electro bent. A couple minutes later, A-Trak's remix erupts into an all-out war on the sounds of the dancefloor. Breaks for singalong hooks, sections to pump your fist and bang your head, moments made to make you smile; it's all there.

Versality is crucial, and A-Trak understands that.
