Global Dance Electronic Interviews - tyDi
GDE: How were you introduced to EDM and what was it about it that left such a profound mark on you?
tyDi: I first heard EDM when I was 15 years old, some of my older siblings showed it to me. I was instantly hooked, well, I'm hooked on music in general! It's like a drug, music has the power to change the way you think, it inspires you, it moves your emotions. I always knew that my future would be owned by music.
What are your personal reasons for creating electronic music and out of all its forms why trance?
Actually I wouldn't say I'm strictly trance at all, my latest album Shooting Stars has two trance songs, the rest are house, progressive, pop, breaks, chillout and experimental... I'm not really into any particular genres, I just write music. Electronic music is just my thing, I do love bands, but I'm a bit of technology geek so it makes sense that I got into making music with a computer.
When you hit the decks at a show, what type of show are you trying to deliver to the crowd?
It's always about creating a unique and unforgettable experience, I want my audience to feel like they've experienced something different, I want to take them on a journey.
After hopefully having a long, heralded career in music, what do you hope to have accomplished during your tenure?
I'm not exactly sure, I just hope my music reaches as many people as possible and that my audience continues to stay attached to my work. I want to make people happy, if I can keep doing what I'm doing now then I'll be satisfied.
Growing up, what were some of the tracks and artists that really made a mark on you and caught your attention?
BT was a huge inspiration to my work. His music was and still is a step above the rest, it's an honor to be working with him now!
When you're approached to produce a remix, what's the process like to actually remix and put your own take on a track? How do you go about observing another artist's work and considering what you want to edit and change about it?
I like to bring something new to the song, I won't remix a track if I can't improve it or take it in an entirely new direction. Often I'll only use the vocal from another song, and I'll completely re-write the instrumental.
How is the EDM scene in Australia? You must know it like the back of your hand, considering you've received such high ranks as a DJ there.
It's great! Australia has a huge scene for electronic music, however these days I spend most of my life in America. I tour the USA and Canada more than I tour in Australia.
What do you have in the works for the upcoming year?
A new album, new videos, new singles, new Global Soundsystem mix compilation and a whole lot of touring around the world!
How do you go about about composing a song? Where do you usually draw most of the influence for your creative process from?
I often start on the piano, I write the musical elements of my songs first. All of my music can be broken down to a song; verse, chorus, bridge..etc. My inspiration comes from anything, anywhere, I like to write about topics that are meaningful to me.
Is there ever a sense of competition with music for you? When you hear another artist's work or see them perform and enjoy it do you ever reflect on it and take it as initiative to push harder with your own career?
Healthy competition arises sometimes, but I very rarely. I just keep my eyes on my own work, I'm forever trying to better myself and challenge myself musically, that's the most important thing.
If you could control what effect one of your songs or melodies had on somebody, what would that be? When someone's a fan of tyDi, what is it that you hope your music gives them?
I just hope people can get an experience from my songs, I want them to be attached to what I write and feel like it has personal meaning to them.
Let's say you were to have time to yourself and could have an introspective personal "time out" of your schedule. What could you say being an artist and live performer has done for you personally as far as improving your life and fulfilling your goals and dreams?
I've definitely become a more worldly person, I've been around the world hundreds of times and seen things that I'd never thought I would see before. It's helped me understand that everyone and everything is different, I've also learned to appreciate just how lucky we all are, and how important it is to love and care for other people. Life isn't about you, it's about others.
