Above & Beyond at Fluxx EDM - Official Review by Global Dance Electronic

WED. JANUARY 18 - Last night was a special one in San Diego because we got a rare visit from the legends of Trance, Above & Beyond. It had been about a month since I'd been to a show so I was really excited. I didn't want to get my hopes up because although being in my top 3 all time favorite Trance artists, I had been disappointed by their EDC 2011 set (before you say anything, that's an argument for another time) so I went into it keeping my expectations down a little just so I didn't feel that crushing disappointment again. This only made the absolutely perfect set they played even more amazing.

When I first got in there the lines were moving fast and the crowd was filling up the place; Cowboy Mike did an amazing job keeping us entertained til the main act got there, but the best had yet come. Since I'm only 20 I couldn't buy drinks inside and I offered to be the DD for my friends so I just decided to stay sober the whole night. After saying hi to various friends and doing a little light dancing, 2 hours zipped by and A & B would be coming on any minute. Some friends wanted to smoke a cigarette so we went outside before they started, and as I'm standing there I turn around to look at the VIP entrance only to see Paavo Siljamäki and Tony McGuinness walking in at that moment. Without even thinking I yelled, "what up!" really loud and they turned and waved at me smiling. As my friends and I stood there in shock for a second, all of us got really excited and pumped up for the show about to start.

About 15 minutes later Cowboy Mike started winding down and 2 of the legends of Trance took the stage instantly bringing an aura of beautiful melodies with them. Behind them on the LED screen they began writing beautiful messages and pumping up the crowd with them; things like "2012, the year of Group Therapy," and saying how wonderful San Diego was, at one point they even put a giant heart on screen (in one of the videos attached) and it gave me such a warm feeling. I had seen this before from videos of their TATW Tour, but its definitely something you must experience live.

As amazing as Group Therapy is I am a die-hard Sirens of the Sea fan, and just as I was hoping they dropped Breaking Ties, the Maor Levi mash-up, right near the beginning (also in the videos attached) and at that point there was no leaving for me. Honestly one of the most amazing parts about their music is the fact that you really don't need drugs or alcohol to enjoy it, it's such a welcoming sound that makes you not care how you dance or look you just want to enjoy it; and when you look up at the stage and see them having such a good a time performing even though they've probably heard the songs more times than any of the fans have, you feel a good connection with them and everyone else there. By the middle of their set things started to pick up- here finally came the legendary live performances I had heard so much about from various friends, where the set stops just being beautiful and starts to get heavy. Sadly I don't have any videos of this because I couldn't stop dancing, but let me do my best to describe to you what it was like: I don't want to say dubstep because then the trance heads will get upset (with good reason), but the style of trance is so heavy and the bass hits you so hard it can almost feel like dubstep at points, but maintaing all the magic of their core style. When you hear it it's honestly not like any other artists I know, which is why I hold such a high standard for them (and why their EDC set disappointed me, too House-y), and I hope everyone who reads this someday gets to experience it if they haven't already.

After a quick break I came back in just in time to hear Sun and Moon and not a single person in that crowd was not singing along (I love those moments). Then the set began to wrap up. Before they ended they wrote some more beautiful messages thanking the crowd for sharing the experience with them and informing everyone they would be back the next night for the 21+ show. It was the best closer to a set I have seen in a while, it made it a lot easier to leave all the magic and fun. All I can say now is, I can't wait for the next time they come back around!

Crystalised Presents: Marco Bailey at Mighty (Bay Area)

While other regions are succumbing to Office Space inspired flair and makeup inspired gloss and shine in what music gets played at venues there, Crystalised and the Bay are keeping the subterranean pressure of techno layered on thick and heavy with event after event of incredible performances by artists standing firm in their devotion to playing techno and house fit to the standards of today's selective audience. For Crystalised's next show, they've brought in one of electronic music's precocious veterans: Marco Bailey.

For nearly twenty years, Marco Bailey has been on the gravity defying edge of what constitutes mind shattering electronic music. Whether it's his relentless drive to create the best musical product, as evidenced by his two decades of mixing, matching, and purifying the sounds and grooves of techno and house, the ambitious pace at which he pushes himself and his career, or the on stage storms he conjures, he has built himself up as one of the best creative representations his field has. One can only hope to say "they were there" when the plugs are are finally pulled after he finishes his sets.

Crystalised Presents: Marco Bailey at Mighty on 119 Utah Street, San Francisco CA, March 3rd, 2012. Presales are currently 10, but expect that price to raise closer to the show's date. For more info, CLICK HERE

Belasco EDM pres. the legendary Bob Sinclar March 29th, 2012

Legend. It's a word that's bestowed far to easily these days. Like the word 'love', it's used both freely and easily by many people to describe many things. But use those words when you're talking about Bob Sinclar and they're far from taken out of context. Bob Sinclar is the man who put the groove back onto the dance floor. A man who marches to the beat of his own tune, whether it's the discotastic 12” delights of 'World Hold On' and 'Love Generation', the deep and soulful beats of his Africanism movement, or the near-obsession with reggae and dance hall that has filled his production work of late. For many, Bob Sinclar is one of the few legendary DJ/producers that we love to listen to - and it's a relationship that's far from over.

Belasco EDM proudly present the legendary Bob Sinclar Thursday, March 29th, 2012. Stay tuned on Global Dance Electronic for further details on the event. #1 supporters for Belasco.

It's obvious who the special guest will be. Tickets for this event are only about $38 which is a steal considering this lineup here in California. Slices Feature: Derrick May "Detroit's Techno Father"

Electronic Beats sat down and had the opportunity to interview a Detroit Techno Pioneer, Derrick May. Derrick speaks about todays Electronic Music scene, how DJ's come and go, Who's responsible for todays "Circus", and how he still active in the Club scene.

"Wherever the music comes from, if there is no focus behind it then it's just noise" - Derrick May

Derrick recalls when two men confronting him asking "Ya man your into a Dubstep? So happy to see you play this shit man" and let's them and everyone know he doesn't stand behind no particular genre. "It's Music man, i just dig it. I don't know where the fuck it comes from. It's just cool shit" and goes on by saying "It's cool, i like it, i play it. I don't care where it comes from. Im happy it is part of some particular movement and Im able to jump on board but i didn't mean to, I just like Music".

Derrick May goes about how the scene today has become a circus, it's unfortunate to see the "movement" move to a different direction. DJ's have to re-establish themselves and keeping their careers moving in a positive direction, which is great, but those are the ones responsible for this circus. This new dance generation just comes out for the circus and to see the clowns but forget and understand this wouldn't be anything without the Music. It's true what Derrick says because today it seems the new scene worry's about all the new LED lights or who has the best production or the biggest sound system but what's really all that if the Music aint banging or sends out a message. Todays dj's are just about giving us a show and not actually spinning records and telling us a story with the decks.

"The core of it is the music, the music is not there. You can have all the lights, all the little tricks and the jewels and treakents that you want. But it in the day if it's not Funky, if it's not causing you to sweat, or its not sending you to a point where your getting some sort or able to enjoy it in the middle of the day, you know, then it's nothing". - Derrick May
