Fresh Entertainment's WinterFresh Music Festival

NOVEMBER 29TH, 2011: Fresh Entertainment is making a FRESH comeback alright. They will be transforming The Pico Rivera Sports Arena into a Winter Wonderland with some of the best world class artists they've ever had for an event.

Last year Fresh experienced a setback with their venue during Winterfresh 2010, which caused a tidal wave of disappointment among their supporters. It seems as though that backwards step only pushed Fresh's owner Tim Kemalyan and his team of promoters to bring Winterfresh back stronger, and better then ever. With the venue locked down and confirmed, a lineup that ranks as one of Fresh's finest moments, and production values among the best of them, don't hesitate to purchase your tickets for the FRESHEST party in December!

Purchase Tickets
Fresh is offering a variety of different EDM genres to choose from Trance to Hardstyle, Progressive to Electro, and Drum & Bass to Dubstep! With many of the artists making their debut LA Appearances, who will you see and where will you be?

Here is a little of what's in store for you everyone:

Hardstyle duo Noise Controllers stand for rough pounding kicks and sweeping, rave ready melodies, so there is no doubt their style of bass thumping madness will take over the floor at Winterfresh!

Sunny Lax will be making his first Southern Californian appearance at Winterfresh, and for me personally this is who I'm most excited to see! In 2005, Lax sent his demo 'PUMA' to Above & Beyonds label Anjunabeats, and the trio were so pleased with the track it become Record Of The Week on TATW, and sunny was immediately signed on! With bangers like this, you can see why!

Another artist taking on the role of headliner is one of the most staunchest proponents of electro based aggression and dance minded bangers, Felix Cartal. Those seeking the heaviest of releases and highest octane grade of rushes should be overjoyed at the opportunity to see Cartal command a club music firestorm from the decks. For a breakdown on him and more info, check out our feature and interview with him here: Felix Cartal Interview

Also on the lineup:
Tritonal, Ashley Wallbridge, DJ Falcon (Daft Crew), Koan Sound, Daniel Portman, DINKA, Lazy Rich, Global Deejays, Neophyte, Nitrous Oxide, Genetix, Jenna G, Michael Cassette, Hirshee, Mutated Forms, Beholder, Sub Zero, Taxman, Replicant, plus many more!

Be sure to purchase your tickets before the event sells out and it will sell out - Click Here

SBTRKT remixes Frank Ocean's - "Thinking Bout You."

London based House/UK Funky/Dubstep producer and performer SBTRKT recently remixed R&B's up and coming artist and Odd Future affiliate Frank Ocean's "Thinking About You." SBTRKT gives this track an uptempo beat with a heavy bass-line that'll have you rocking your head back and forth while the vocals of Frank Ocean echo through the sound system and into your ears slowly caressing your ear drum. This is a pretty good track we here at GDE enjoy and recommend you take a listen. Gotta love SBTRKT!

Daft Punk Leaked Tracks From "Sky Dive" Album

NOVEMBER 23RD, 2011 - Three Daft Punk tracks have reportedly been "leaked" by Emma, a 19 year old girl who lives in London claiming her father works at Virgin Records. According to her, the tracks were on her dad's USB stick under the file "Daft Punk - Sky Dive (2012) (Preview Promo)". Everybody has been fooled multiple times in recent years of "leaked tracks" and upcoming "world tours" but nothing ever happened's or gets released. However, we do know for a fact the legendary French duo are planning to release a new album named "Sky Dive" sometime in 2012. And, take note that their logos on their official social networking sites have changed to a Red theme, which might mean something too (...that we look into things too much?). Every time Daft Punk is working on a new album or tour the logo changes. Examples being: Homework (Red-Orange Color), Discovery (Chrome), Human After All (Black), and Alive 2007 (Blue Color). For once, we could finally be witnessing a real credible leak and a hint at what is to come. You decide whether it's legit or someone just trying to troll the world.

We'll soon find out in the next year if this tour and new album is true. Maybe this is what the Mayans really predicated on what's really going to occur on Dec. 21st, 2012; A new beginning "Around The World."

Carl Cox "All Roads Lead To The Dance Floor" Review

AVALON HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 27th, 2011 - Carl Cox, a true pioneer in House music. No words I can say can even begin to explain how phenomenal his set was at Avalon during Halloween weekend. 4 hours of pure House and Techno beats, and not once was the crowd even close to boredom during his 4 hour performance. I haven't seen so many people this hyped up in a while, and excitement and anticipation was at an all time high considering he rarely even comes close to the west coast

Carl Cox's "All Roads Lead To The Dance Floor" tour made a stop at Los Angeles, CA during Halloween weekend and it was by far one of the highlights for us in 2011. The night started off great with Kazell warming up the dance floor by spinning some Tech mixed in with Tribal House tracks. The crowd was definitely feeling him and were 2-stepping away to his music. 12 AM came around and the man of the hour, Carl Cox, came on to the decks and got to work right away. Five minutes into his set, the dance floor was packed with screaming House heads ready to groove to his mixes and lose themselves in the beats. "Oh Yes, Oh Yes" Mr. Cox yelled to the crowd as he dropped bass heavy House filled with snares and kicks that sent everyone rising from their feet. Smooth, soothed Techno had all the Tech-Freaks pop-locking and liquid dancing to the grooves, showcasing old moves many hadn't seen in ages. Not one beat was skipped during his entire set and his playing had all of us dancing uncontrollably for hours on end. The whole crowd went absolutely wild as the minutes and seconds flew by and Cox continued his 4 x 4 barrage. The visuals and sound made the night even more incredible - it felt like seeing fireworks for the first time at Disneyland. The lasers and lights had the whole place lit up. Carl Cox spun for a breathtaking four hours straight and dropped several heaters of tracks from his new album "All Roads Lead To The Dance Floor," and hearing those tracks for the first time in a club was orgasm inducing. We at GDE highly recommend you catch the "Three-Deck Wizard" the next time he drops in California.

Global Dance Electronic Interviews - Felix Cartal

NOVEMBER 17th, 2011: Felix Cartal's sound is a manifestation of what electro has threatened to be. A frothing at the mouth, iron fisted, steroid operated dance floor pitbull. The songs weren't supposed to become anthems, they were supposed to become the sonic equivalent of amphetamines. And Cartal delivers.

The young Canadian's trademark sound of glass shattering electro has rattled speakers from his hometown of Vancouver to European destinations known more for sweat inducing tranceathons than body breaking synth spasms. Albums like 2010's "Popular Music" and singles such as "World Class Driver" have further cemented his position as an artist with longevity long beyond trends and transitions. He has far passed the point where he shows potential, and is crossing into territory populated by those at holding the reins of screaming arenas and life long devotions.

GDE: What inspired you to create dance music as opposed to other forms of music?

Felix Cartal: I had played a lot of different types of music growing up, from pop-rock, to punk, to prog-rock. During this time, I was working on music with software on the side, it was just sort of a natural progression into a new type of music that was very exciting to me. The energy from the crowds at dance shows is very similar to the energy at punk shows. And this similarity made it easy for me to really fall in love with dance music.

When you first started producing and DJing, how was the EDM scene in Canada?

When I started the scene wasn't fully developed but there was a definite interest for what was going on. The first show I ever played in Vancouver was amazing and I'll never forget it.

There's a video online of you experimenting and doing your own field testing for your single "The Joker" on several different street wandering individuals. Do you take in consideration what people might want to hear when they see your name next to a track or do you just produce tracks based purely upon what you personally want to hear and make?

I think I feel like people expect heavier, more banging tracks from me, because that's the original sound I started with. I guess I'm always conscious of making tracks that are aggressive in nature, but definitely am not limiting myself to that. I want to blend that aggression with melodic tracks, things that are catchy, songs that people can sing along to but still let loose to in the club.

When you were in the process of creating "Popular Music", what were you trying to give to people that they wouldn't get from you outside of the context of a complete, unified body of tracks?

I like doing albums for two reasons. First, when creating a larger body of music, you have more room to take chances with your music. With a single, you have a certain set of expectations to maintain, and with an album, it's the supporting tracks that really excite me. The ones that fall outside of the typical dance structure are the most exciting ones to make, and without releasing 12-13 tracks at a time, I'm not sure if this sort of experimentation would be possible. Second, I feel like the album is sort of dying a bit, and I've always grown up listening to records from beginning to end. The challenge of making something longer, that you can listen to from start to finish is something I'm always trying to overcome.

Do you favor producing or performing in live settings more? Or are both at around the same level of enjoyment for you?

It's hard to compare the two. I think they are both very dependent on one another though. The excitement of finishing a new song and the moment of playing it live for the first time is always an exciting yet nerve-wracking process. That whole moment where you're like "I wonder if this song is going to work?"

How's everything shaping up with regards to the creation of your next album? What do you hope to give the listening public with your sophomore record?

It's almost done and will be done by December. I think this album is a big directional change with me. There are a lot of collabs on this record that are very exciting for me, and I just hope that people will get the songs stuck in their heads. I'd much rather have someone whistling my song walking down the street than hearing it on the radio. That's the sign of a truly memorable track.

Do you have any goals artistically with the music you release?

I think I've really broadened my musical vision into just making music that is catchy and memorable. As simple as that. I change what I like a lot, and I've always been afraid of pigeonholing myself by being too specific with one kind of sound. So by making a non-genre related goal, I think it allows me to grow however I see fit. The songs I love the most are the ones that get stuck in my head. That's the music I want to make.

Volcano has to be one of the most high energy, frenzy inducing dance tracks I've ever heard. The vocals, the build up - everything just comes together superbly. Do you plan on working on anything else that follows the same formula of the massive drop and the aggressive, dramatic vocal parts? Are there any vocalists with similar backgrounds to Johnny Whitney's that you'd like to work with?

Wow thank you! Johnny was a very exciting project for me because The Blood Brothers was one of my favourite bands growing up. It was more of an honour to work with him than anything else, and I was really excited when he agreed to be on the project with me. My upcoming record has collabs with Sebastien Grainger which is very exciting for me, because DFA 1979 has always been one of my favourite bands. I've also collab'd with New Ivory, a band on Dim Mak, that has a similar indie-rock sound as well.

Did you ever have any times of reflection where you looked back on songs you've released and wished you could have done things differently? Are there new directions or any radical shifts you want to take with your music's core sound?

Every song I've ever done I can always hear things I want to improve on. If there is every a day when I can't find faults in my music, then I think my career would be over. If I can't find things to improve, then what is the point in continuing?

Decades down the line, how do you hope people view your music?

I hope they are still listening to it and that it makes them happy.

How Electronic Music Moved the Masses in 2011

NOVEMBER 17th, 2011: We at Global Dance Electronic recently read an article by Charlie Amter from The Hollywood Reporter on how Electronic Dance music has taking over 2011 and is expected to blow up even bigger in 2012. Charlie's article talks about how much mainstream America is taking notice of this "Electronic Revolution" growing so rapidly in our neighborhoods and is no longer a "secret rave" located in some random warehouse. “It’s exciting to see it crossing over,” says Insomniac president and CEO Pasquale Rotella. “It’s something I dreamt of 20 years ago.” on how Las Vegas has become our "Ibiza." And we couldn't agree with him more. The culture that actually originally started here in the good ol US of A, Chicago and Detroit to be exact, is once again coming back harder for when it first did 20 some years ago and we can expect some insane things for the EDM community in 2012. Be ready to party all night and work all day for the ticket money because these festivals aren't going to be cheap.

How Electronic Music Moved the Masses in 2011
While the live music market is still struggling, one sector is seeing explosive growth. THR explores the recent paradigm shift which finds companies such as WME and Live Nation positioning themselves for 2012 just in case DJs really are the new rock stars.
If 1991 was the year punk broke, 2011 was the year club music crept into the heart of America.
"In a trend that was born in the EU and Scandinavia and has been building stateside for the better part of a decade, the floodgates burst open this year with everyone from Rihanna to Britney Spears riding the coattails of Euro-styled synth hooks to the top of the charts. In-demand DJs are now pocketing as much as $200,000 a show and selling out multiple nights in cities from New York to Los Angeles.

Perhaps the best example of the electronic revolution? Insomniac Events’ Electric Daisy Carnival, a dance festival that has attracted tens of thousands of revelers to stadium-style venues for years. It made national headlines in 2010 when a 15-year-old girl died of an ecstasy overdose after the concert in Los Angeles. Since then, attendance has exploded, reaching 230,000 when the event moved to Las Vegas this year — and injected some $136 million into the Clark County economy, according to one study.
Scouring YouTube, Twitter and the club scene for future headliners are companies such as William Morris Endeavor, early adopters of the dance trend who opened up an electronic music department in 2008 that now boasts more than 150 acts. Others followed suit: APA recently formed an electronic music division, as has Live Nation in the U.S. and Canada (both launched this year).
“It’s exciting to see it crossing over,” says Insomniac president and CEO Pasquale Rotella. “It’s something I dreamt of 20 years ago.”
What Rotella might have not imagined, however, is just how large the EDM (electronic dance music) movement would become. While the genre doesn’t outsell hip-hop in recorded music, it performs well on iTunes worldwide and has surpassed rap in the live arena.
Once word slowly tricked out that Rotella and companies such as Holland’s ID&T (which does analogous events in Europe) were making millions via house music-centric events that mimic old school “raves” with top-tier DJ talent and experiential lighting elements, the mold was set a few years ago for what has now become big business.
But it’s not just festivals anymore where real money is being made in the live electronic music market. DJ-producer Deadmau5 recently sold out six consecutive nights at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, eclipsing the venue’s previous record holder Rage Against the Machinein a symbolic passing of the torch from rock to house music for teens and twentysomethings.
Earlier this month in his hometown of Toronto, Deadmau5 played to more than 20,000 at Rogers Centre, a venue usually reserved for names such as U2Tiesto, who is ranked among the top-grossing live acts in the world, recently headlined the Home Depot Center (capacity: 27,000) in Carson, California (last year, the Dutch trance titan took in nearly $900,000 in one three-night stand at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium). To compare, Taylor Swift can pull in similar-sized crowds, but few others come close.
Live Nation, still smarting from a weak 2010, wants in on the action. Rotella says Insomniac has been “in talks” with the live events giant regarding a possible partnership, but the original West Coast player might not need them. In the coming weeks, Insomniac, which already announced a return to Las Vegas for its crown jewel summer blowout (presales have been strong) is expected to soon announce a massive expansion of the Electric Daisy Carnival concept, with 2012 stops planned for the highly populated East Coast corridor and Brazil, although not all will be EDC-branded.
“We’re doing 16 festivals in 2012,” he said. “Some are locked down and some are getting there.” To be clear, not all the events will be EDC-branded. Only five will carry the EDC name, yet the fact that Rotella is rolling into so many new markets, some international, shows the strength of the dance music sector, even in a still-lingering recession.
Still, despite the expansion, Rotella says it’s all about going where the demand is: EDC in Colorado will not happen in 2012 as it has the past few years. “We couldn’t gross enough [there] to support people’s expectations,” he said, noting that already the mile high market was buying tickets to the larger annual Las Vegas edition of EDC in sizable numbers.
When it comes to DJ-based electronic music experiences in a live setting, large-scale events, be it 20,000-seat arenas or 70,000-capacity stadiums, are increasingly where the movement is heading, in part because the overhead is so much lower -- a DJ needs little more than a laptop, as opposed to a pop star like Lady Gaga who requires a few dozen trucks’ worth of production and gear (although some DJs, such as Swedish House Mafia and Kaskade, are investing in ever more complex lighting rigs). Dance acts, which are mostly vocals-free, also don’t rely on radio play and aren’t restricted by a promotional calendar. Fans are devotional in a way the big music labels are only recently starting to understand.
Take, for example, Miami’s three-day Ultra Music Festival, which last year featured more than 130 acts. It’s already at 70 percent capacity in presales, say promoters, who haven’t even revealed the talent lineup yet. “Last year, we sold out six weeks prior [to the event],” says Russell Faibisch, co-founder of the fest, which launched in 1999. “This year, we sold 100,000 tickets within the first week, and we haven’t even announced one artist yet.” Ultra’s website crashed briefly after more than 1 million page views put the squeeze on its servers as fans snapped up early-bird tickets.
“We can see this trend getting stronger by how fast we’ve achieved certain milestones,” UMF’s Director of Business affairs, Adam Russakoff, added. This without as much as a press release or single ad taken out…all that UMF organizers needed to do was send an email blast and post on their Facebook page. Around 165,000 are expected in 2012 to hit the spring break-like dance music festival over three days in March.
But it’s not just festivals attracting fans at a record clip. Less reported than the hundreds of thousands that turn up at annual blowouts such as Ultra and EDC are the countless mid-sized shows at venues which typically host bands that take place from Atlanta to Chicago by DJs most Americans have never heard of.
Bassnectar sold 21,000 tickets over two nights at Verizon Wireless at Encore Park in Atlanta last month in a co-headline with Pretty LightsAvicii has sold around 9000 tickets so far for an 11/18 gig in Washington D.C. Swedish House Mafia sold out their forthcoming December Madison Square Garden engagement in less than 10 minutes during a September pre-sale (around 15,000 will attend the sold out show).
On Nov. 26, promoters in Washington D.C are expecting around 15,000 at RFK stadium for an event featuring France’s Martin Solveig (who recently cracked the U.S. pop charts with his “Hello,” which peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100), Moby, Armand Van Helden and others simply called “Fall Massive.”
In Los Angeles, one venue co-owner remodeled his entire club to better serve dance music fans in addition to the Music Box's busy weekly schedule serving rock fans at traditional live gigs, which sell slower and are less profitable (no VIP “table service” at an indie rock concert).  “It’s amazing what’s happening,” says Kobi Danan of Hollywood’s Music Box. “The minute we put the tickets on sale for some of these [electronic] artists they sell out…we don’t even have to spend any money advertising or marketing on acts like Nero,” he said, adding that he does “eight times the business” at the bar on a dance music night versus a typical rock or rap gig where fans leave as soon as the show is over.
According to the co-owner and talent booker, it wasn’t like this just two years ago. Back then, he “paid a small fracture” of the kind of guarantees The Music Box must cough up today to land a hot name such as Afrojack, which the club recently did. “It wasn’t as popular as it is now,” he says of electronic music. “The demand in this market is so high it’s almost hard to keep tickets [in stock].”
An emerging trend over the past few years is bigger DJs who can sell thousands of tickets at arena shows doing high-ticket-price one offs at clubs such as The Music Box and Playhouse in Hollywood ($100 per ticket entry) or multiple night stands at mid-sized venues, as Tiesto did at his three-night stand at the Shrine Auditorium.
As 2012 approaches, it’s not just big names like Tiesto who are ready to do the kind of numbers the Dutchman did in 2010 and 2011, either. “What’s interesting to us is how quickly this is exploding,” says Huston Powell, an Austin-based promoter at C3 Presents, which produces the increasingly dance-heavy Lollapalooza annually.
Adds WME agent Joel Zimmerman, who helped put together this year’s Identity Festival, a summer tour featuring some of dance music’s ascendant names, and whose agency represents such acts as AxwellCalvin Harris and Kaskade: “The number of big DJs on the rise that can do this kind of business now is substantial. It’s hitting a lot of different people.”
WME isn’t the only agency in L.A. making moves in electronic music circles. “After a vibrant underground following for decades, electronic music is now viewed as a legitimate art form,” saysJosh Humiston, partner and co-head of concerts at APA. “We continue to focus on growing this division,” said the agent, who recently landed Paul Oakenfold as a client for the agency’s growing department.
Powell has seen growth of a different kind at his own company over the past year, as he and co-workers found themselves shocked at the explosive sales in the Midwest at some of their EDM shows. “We started to see all these DJs develop a following in the Chicago area so we booked Deadmau5 show at the Congress Theater last year,” Powell said. The response was so great they immediately secured the DJ-producer for a series of 2011 shows in the Windy City. “We did 21,000 tickets in three plays over five months in Chicago,” he continued. “We could have done more.”
So what does the promoter attribute the large ticket sales, surprising to almost all industry watchers? Social media, in part. “They have this open dialogue with their fans, more than rock bands,” he said of DJs that boast formidable Facebook and Twitter followings. “They just tell their people they’re coming and the fans come.”
With new hotly tipped artists from France’s Madeon to Sweden’s Dada Life on the rise this winter, get ready for even more DJs to amass audiences set to surprise promoters, fans and even the artists themselves in 2012. “There’s a whole wave coming,” said Powell."
